Retrofitting historic buildings
Introduction
When it comes to the opportunities to enhance the energy efficiency of historic buildings and contribute to renewable and low carbon energy generation it needs to be noted that historic buildings and places are likely to be more sensitive to change and as such a careful approach is needed. It is not possible to give a “blanket” solution which will apply to everything
Designation, Policy and GuidanceĀ
It is important for the owners and occupiers of historic buildings to understand designations that may apply to where they live and the subsequent legal and planning implications. Traditional buildings and places may be designated such as by being listed, or located within a conservation area, registered park or garden or scheduled monument.
Warwick District Council and Stratford District Council have similar guidance on what is a listed building
Historic buildings and sustainability
Traditional and modern buildings can differ fundamentally in how they manage moisture, air and heat and this can influence what energy efficient measures will work with each building. It is therefore a challengeĀ to get the right balance between energy efficiency and preserving the historical value of traditional buildings
